Why I Envy the National Guard
Imagine being given an opportunity to confront racism, injustice, oppression, and inequality all in one moment? A moment that will be captured on images and beamed around the world in seconds, a moment that will demonstrate compassion in the face of hatred, and project strength in the form of tolerance?
That’s the golden opportunity being given to the National Guard troops sent into American cities, and I envy them that opportunity. It’s not going to be easy, but nothing heroic ever is.
We are at a turning point in this country. There will be change, one way or another, and history will judge us all on our actions during this time. The National Guard troops currently occupy a unique position of respect among the angry throngs because of principled leaders who understand the power of taking a knee.
There is an enemy out there, but it is not the peaceful protestors exercising their rights. I give the utmost respect to the troops who’ve been injected into a chaotic situation by an administration that is farcical at best, criminal at worst, and want them to know we see their strength, their compassion for their fellow Americans, and respect them for their restraint.
To the men and women of the National Guard: You never should have had to be there. But you are, and your actions thus far have reflected great credit upon you, your units, and the National Guard as a whole. Keep protecting lives and property while honoring the rights of peaceful protestors, and remember that the decisions you make in a moment of crisis will remain with you forever.
And thank you.
